Geological Institute
of the Russian Academy of Sciences
The Geological Institute was founded in 1930. During its existence it became the leading institution of the country in the field of earth sciences.
The Instituite is involved in research of fundamental problems of tectonics, lithology, and stratigraphy.
The results are published in the “Transactions of the Geological Institute” (more than 600 issues have appeared since 1932 ), in monographs and scientific journals, including “Geotectonics”, “Stratigraphy and Geological Correlation”, “Lithology and Natural Resources”, which were founded in cooperation with the Geological Institute.
Main research tendencies of the Institute
- Global and regional stratigraphic schemes based on a complex of techniques.
- The isotopic geochemistry of sedimentary rocks, and chemostratigraphy.
- Interaction among geological, geochemical, and biotic factors during sedimentogenesis.
- Specific features of sedimentogenesis and lithogenesis in structures of various types.
- Tectonic and geodynamic models of the formation and evolution of the Earth lithosphere and main types of structures in continents and oceans.
- Neotectonics and modern geodynamics as a basis for prognosis of natural and technogenic hazards.
- Intraplate tectonics and geodynamics, the evolution of consolidated crust.
- Geology of the World Ocean.
- Sedimentary basins: structure, evolution, primary and secondary concentrations of mineral raw materials; modeling.
- Global correlations and the models of geological processes and events, the direction of changes and the role of rapid changes and catastrophes in the Earth history.
- Paleoclimates in the Late Precambrian and Phanerozoic: evolution of zonality, dynamics, consequences of climatic changes.
- Interactions in the system: biota - geological environment – tectonics – climate – ore formation in the key epochs of the geological history and the history of biosphere.
